Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—February 14 through February 18 —in the Upper School.
Monday was our first Curiosity Corner— a new series of workshops, hosted by and in the R+D Center, that features creation stations for students, faculty, and staff to explore, do, and make. The Valentine’s Edition of Curiosity Corner included a community mural, light painting, art coding, and more. The event was co-hosted by SAGA and SBAC.
In Monday’s advisory, students talked about protest and democracy by watching a TED Talk on the history, impact, and intersection of civil rights, and gay rights.
Then it was the 11th graders’ turn to go ice skating! They headed to the Larz Anderson Ice Rink—which was quite cold! Luckily, hot chocolate and muffins kept everyone warm. It was another fun time!
In Tuesday’s Club Spotlight, we spoke to the History Bowl Team about what they love about their club. The team participated in the Massachusetts History Bee and Bowl State Championships last weekend—and won second place! This means they’re going to Nationals in Virginia in April.
We announced the winners of the 2022 Alex Cohn Grant at US Meeting on Wednesday. Congratulations to Thai Davis ’23 and Ben Litvak-Hinenzon ’23! Inspired by the rising gas prices and the toll that fossil fuel emissions have taken on the environment, Thai, a current junior, will convert a diesel car into an automobile fueled by vegetable oil. Ben plans to create a tiny produce farm in his backyard consisting of fruits, vegetables, and chickens. He will be keeping a blog that documents the whole process, and will also provide resources about using sustainability to halt climate change.

During US Advisory Meetings on Thursday students signed up for spring clubs. There are a handful of new clubs coming up next term, including Cognitive Science, Yoga and Mindfulness, and Textile clubs.
Thursday afternoon was the Upper School BVR Film Festival Premiere Screening. Upper School students showcased their short films in Bradley Hall. The Best Picture went to Halloween: Reborn by Kiernan Collins ’27, Samuel Steere ’26, Verviene Oringer ’27, and Daniel Kemp ’26.
We ended the week on Friday with 10th grade wellness and identity workshops. Affinity Groups also met during lunch block.
