MIT LIGO scientists Dr. Lisa Barsotti and Dr. Matt Evans visited campus this past Friday to talk about their work in the discovery of gravitational waves – a discovery considered to be THE big science news of the year. Before spring break, 9th grade science classes had a Modern Physics Week, where they learned all about LIGO, gravitational waves, space-time, light, and relativity.
LIGO is a joint project operated by the California Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and funded by the National Science Foundation. Its purpose is to detect cosmic gravitational waves and to develop gravitational-wave observations as an astronomical tool.
