Girls’ Varsity Tennis –
The Girls’ Varsity Tennis team faced its toughest opponent to date, Nobles, but unfortunately the match was stopped due to weather. Nonetheless, the girls went out and competed hard. Of note was the play of freshman, Michaela Markwart, who played an excellent match at number one singles and was winning when the match was called. Later in the week, the team took on league opponent Berwick with a slightly modified lineup because of illnesses that have affected the team. With the support and excellent play of Jasmin Breakstone ’16 and Lily Harkins ’18, from the JV team, the team was able to put together a strong lineup and was still able to sweep all the matches. The most impressive performance of the day came from Lauren Morgart ’18 who dropped a second set 5-7, and was down 3-7 in a ten point tie-breaker when she rattled off seven straight points with excellent serves and aggressive play to win her match 10-7. In fact it is the impressive play of both these freshmen, that earned them Athletic Accolades for the week. As the team heads into the final two weeks of its season, it will face two more formidable league opponents (Newton and Winsor). It should be an exciting two weeks, as the girls try to defend their EIL title from last year, and avenge their only loss against Newton.
Boys’ Varsity Tennis –
Boys’ Varsity Tennis only had one match last week against Berwick on Thursday. The boys came away with a tight victory. Berwick posed real strength at 2nd and 3rd singles, pushing Will French ’17 and Joey Steinberg ’15 to their limits. Will fell 6-1, 6-0, and Joey lost 7-10 in a third set super tiebreaker. Senior co-Captain, Gabe Belkind-Gerson, played his best match of the season dispatching the Berwick #1 in two quick sets. At doubles, Beaver’s pairings of Marc Davis/Brendan Chamoun and Zach Rosenberg/Sam Waldman showed their most dominant form, ending Berwick’s hopes of an upset in two quick straight-set matches.
This coming week is a busy one. Beaver Tennis will travel to Landmark on Monday, host Concord on Wednesday, and host Dexter on Friday.
Girls’ JV Tennis –
The Girls JV Tennis team had another busy week. They played two home matches. The first was against Brimmer and May and Beaver was triumphant with a 4-1 victory. The second match was against a very good Winsor team. Beaver’s singles players were not quite as consistent as the opposition. The doubles team of Julia Schwartz ’15 and Micaela Furman ’15 won 8-4 in a very competitive match.
Boys’ JV Tennis –
The Boys JV Tennis team worked hard this past week, but was beaten by the varsity squad of Cambridge School of Weston on Tuesday, thanks to their very strong singles play. Co-captains Joey Searle ’16 and Sam Zintl ’16 won their match at 1st doubles, and Michael Schaff ’16 and Pierce Adams ’17 gutted out at win at 2nd doubles via a tiebreaker.
Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse –
The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team played two games last week beating LCA at home on Monday 14 – 6 and then traveling to Worcester Academy and losing 11 – 5. Against LCA, captains Nat Brown ’15 and Jimmy Bell ’15 both had huge games. Nat scored 5 goals and had 1 assist, and Jimmy had 4 goals and 2 assists. The rest of the scoring was done by Grady Newberg ’15 with 1 goal and 2 assists, Jabari Johnson ’17 with 2 goals and 1 assist, Justin Calka ’17 with a goal and Chris Bucking ’18 also had a goal. Dan McDonald ’15 had another great day in goal, and the defense lead by captain Alex Volcy ’15, Eric LiBassi ’15 and Tyler Monaghan ’15 played well shutting down LCA’s offense. Against Worcester Academy, the team went up against a very tough and physical opponent. Captain Jimmy Bell ’15 had 2 goals, captain Nat Brown ’15 had 3 assists, Chris Bucking ’18 scored 1 goal and had 1 assist, Jabari Johnson ’17 scored 1 goal, and Noah Zakarian ’17 finished the scoring with 1 goal. The team travels to play Bancroft on Monday and hosts out of league opponent Lawrence Academy on Friday.
Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse –
This past week the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team faced two league opponents. On Monday the team won 14-11, in a close game against Concord Academy. On Friday, the team lost to Winsor School, 14-6. Justine Hatton ’16 led the team with 7 goals and 3 assists for the week. Julia Gatewood ’18 played well in goal – saving 13 shots on Monday. On Wednesday, the team travels to Maine to face Berwick Academy and ends the week with a game against Southfield on Friday.
Varsity Baseball –
Beaver Varsity Baseball had a tough week, losing the three games played. Beaver looks to rebound this week on Monday vs Berwick (away), Thursday home vs LCA, and Saturday home vs Brimmer and May. The team is currently 2-3 in the conference.
Varsity Softball –
Beaver Softball came up on the losing end of two league games this past week, as they hosted Concord Academy on Wednesday and Winsor on Friday. This week, the girls will travel to Lexington Christian Academy on Monday and then Bancroft on Wednesday. The team is working hard and showing improvement.
Ultimate Frisbee –
Ultimate Frisbee is looking good so far this year.. They had a fun game and victory over CSW’s B team, but some aspects of Beaver’s game can still be fine tuned. The boys are expecting a hard week of practice as they prepare for away games vs. Concord on Wednesday and Pingree on Friday. Both games are going to be grueling matches, so Beaver’s Ultimate team has to be on its “A” game.
