Weekly Athletics Write-Up 9/22/14

Girls Varsity Soccer –

The Girls Varsity Soccer team faced two of the top teams in New England in class C this past week. After a tough game at Pingree, the girls battled hard against LCA but came up short, 3-0. This week, the girls look to bounce back against Providence CD, Dana Hall and look forward to a rematch against Portsmouth Abbey.

Boys  Varsity Soccer –

The Boys Varsity Soccer team had a busy week with games against NEPSAC Class B power, Rivers, Lexington Christian Academy, and NEPSAC Class C champs Millbrook. On Wednesday, the boys held Rivers to a 3-3 deadlock until the dying moments before falling 5-3. On Friday, Beaver beat LCA 4-0. Nat Brown ’15 led the way with two goals. On Sunday, the boys traveled to Westminster School to take on Millbrook in the New England Prep Showcase. Despite playing their best match of the season, the boys suffered some very hard luck and lost 3-2. This week, the team will take on EIL opponents Berwick (away on Tuesday) and Portsmouth Abbey (away on Saturday).

Varsity Volleyball – 

The Varsity Volleyball team suffered two hard luck losses this week against Pingree (1-3) and Concord (2-3). The team was competitive in both games showing vast improvements in their serving and defensive play. Alea Laidlaw ’16 led the team with 11 kills against Concord, and Annie Markstein ’15 received recognition as the player of the match due to her superior passing and digs.

Varsity Field Hockey – 

Beaver Field Hockey logged their first win of the season Friday afternoon against Lexington Christian Academy. Samantha Sparrow ’15 recorded her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke and Annabelle Fulton ’18  was able to gain the lead for Beaver with another goal in the second half. The field hockey team has a busy week ahead with three games, the first being Tuesday against Montrose at home.

Varsity Golf –

Beaver Varsity Golf had two matches last week against very strong teams and lost both of them.  On Wednesday, Beaver hosted Pingree and lost 5 – 1.  Hudson Roddy ’18 played a very close match against last year’s league MVP and lost by one hole. Jacob Florence ’19 beat his opponent by 2 holes. On Saturday, the team traveled down to Portsmouth Abbey and played the best team they have faced this season and lost 6 – 0. The team looks to get back on track this week with two home matches against Concord on Tuesday and Bancroft on Friday.

Varsity Cross Country –

The Boys Varsity Cross Country team had a solid start to the season this past week with a win against Lexington Christian Academy.  On Wednesday, the boys ran hard and outpaced the LCA team to take 5 of the top 8 spots and win by a score of 26-37.  Leo Connelly ’15 was the top finisher for Beaver, placing second. Teammate and captain Sam Glenn ’16 finished fourth, followed by Ryan Joy ’17 in fifth. Rounding out the scoring runners, Jackson Wu ’17 and Jake Cowen-Whitman ’18 came in seventh and eighth.  Next Tuesday, the team will race at home (Larz Anderson Park) against Pingree.

The Girls Varsity Cross Country team had a great win against Lexington Christian Academy this week, sweeping the top 3 spots. Libby Pohl ’17 posted not only the fastest time of the meet, but the fastest time in the League for the week.  She was followed by Michaela Markwart ’18 and Nichole Irving ’16, both running in a cross country meet for the first time. Captain Catherine Wei ’15 and another first-year runner, Arielle Dede ’18, sealed the win for Beaver by finishing eighth and ninth. Lexie Duarte ’16 was close behind in tenth place. The winning score was 23-33. Next Tuesday, the team will race at home (Larz Anderson Park) against the teams of Pingree and Winsor.
