Ms. Reder’s 6th grade students design and build a hot water heater

Posted on March 12, 2014

In class the students have discussed how NASA is currently trying to design moon colonies and need to use a large-scale custom built cartridge heater or to harvest solar power to heat buildings there due to the subzero temperatures. Students were introduced to the materials and the concept of a hot water heater, then began to build a leak proof tube that would conduct water. Then students were asked to design a system that would produce the greatest temperature change in water from its starting cup to its collecting cup. The photos above are the first iteration of their designs. In class this week, students will assess their results and use their data to inform new designs!
