Girls’ Varsity Basketball

The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team began 2014 with a two-win week. The first win was over EIL team LCA, followed by a victory over a talented ISL squad, St. Marks. Ciara Dillon ’16 and Miah Andrews ’15 were solid in the guard spots, while Sophia Friedfertig’s ’16 defense was stellar. This week Beaver has two EIL contests, Wednesday at Winsor, and Saturday they host Bancroft.

Boys’ Varsity Basketball

The Boys’ Varsity Basketball team went 2-1 last week. On Wednesday, the team defeated Lexington Christian Academy 71-41. The victory was a total team effort as 12 players scored in the game. On Saturday, the team participated in the Ballas TV Invitational and lost a hard fought game to the Hoosac School by a score of 56-54. The team rebounded with a double overtime victory on Sunday vs. St. Mark’s at the Hoop Dreams Magazine Invitational at Tufts University.

Girls’ Varsity Ice Hockey

The Girl’s Varsity Hockey Team had two big games over the weekend. On Friday the team traveled to Pingree School to take on a small but strong team. Despite, a great effort, Beaver lost. On Saturday the team played their first home game of the season at Dexter school against Dana Hall.  Right front the start, Beaver had control of the puck for a good part of the game. Down 3-0 going into the 2nd period, Claire Mills ’15 took a pass from Lila O’neil ’20 and skated the length of the ice to get a shot on net, and Grace Bucking ’15 was there for the rebound and her first career goal.  A few minutes later, a loose puck at center ice on the power play gave Molly Honan ’17 a break away for her first goal of the season. At the start of the 3rd period, down 7-2, the girls were looking for a comeback.  A shot front the high slot from Molly for her 2nd of the game, a loose rebound for Kat Green ’17 for her first of the year, and a quick shot from Maya Blair ’14 and Beaver was right back in it. Dana put in 2 late goals to seal a 9-5 win, but the team played and fought back until the final buzzer. Goalie Vida Bailey ’17  kept the team in the game all afternoon with numerous saves. The team travels to the North End to play Winsor on Wednesday for a rematch from their first game of the season.

Men’s Fencing

The Beaver Boys Fencing Team showed continue growth and strength this past weekend at the Quad-Meet at Concord-Carlisle High School when they competed against Concord-Carlisle High School, Commonwealth and International School of Boston. The Boys started the day with a 15-12 victory over Commonwealth. Cameron Mayer ’15 continued his domination throughout. Going 3-0 in this bout (eventually going 8-0 for the day) and leading the Mens Foil team to a 5-4 victory. Chris Brosnan ’16 went undefeated, 3-0, as well and lead the sabre to a 7-2 victory. In the next match, the Men’s Team was routed 10-17 but took the time to continue to develop and learn from the well established CCHS. The Women’s team continued to show that the team will not be overlooked with a 10-17 loss against CCHS. In the final match of the day, the Men’s Team was victorious 14-13.

Women’s Fencing

The Women closed the gap since last time and ended with a 12-15 defeat. Our Women’s Foil team continued to demonstrate that they are one of the best consistent foil teams in the state by winning 7-2. Tina Odim-O’Neill ’17 and Women’s team captain Emma Lynch Both went 3-0 during this encounter.

In the Women’s second match, the Foil team and the Sabre team were both operating with a single replacement fencer each. The Team Managers, Katherine Rodriguez ’14 and Molly Herschkowitz ’14, both stepped up to help the team in there time of need. The very inexperienced Molly Herschkowitz ’14 impressed both teams by going 3-6 in sabre without any previous experience!  In our final match of the day, against the International School of Boston, the Women’s Team won 16-11.
