Weekly Athletics Write-Up

Girls Basketball

The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team finished an impressive 3-0 last week with victories over Newton Country Day, Pingree and Portsmouth Abbey. “The team is coming together and playing great team basketball at the right time.” Commented Coach Levin.  Their game vs. Pingree was a solid team victory and held them to 26 points. NCD and PA scored an average of 13 points. This week conference foe LCA comes to Beaver on Monday at 4:00 p.m and class A Worcester Academy travels to “the Dam” on Friday at 5:00 p.m.

Boys Basketball

The Beaver Boys’ Basketball team had a successful week going 3-0. They started the week with an impressive 64-36 victory over league rival Pingree. Both teams were undefeated in league play heading into the game. Senior, Joe Connelly, led the team with 14 points. He connected on 4 three pointers. The team finished the week with a non-league victory on Saturday over Rivers. Senior, Jherson Colon, led the team with 14 points in their 55-48 victory.

Fencing

This past week, the Fencing Team showed strong performances in two meets against Boston Latin and BUA. The Boy’s Fencing team fought a close match against Boston Latin and lost 16-11.  Despite the loss, team captains Cam Mayer in Foil and Brian Rubenstein in Epee went undefeated. The Girl’s Fencing Team celebrated a win against Boston Latin, 14-13. The Girl’s Saber and Girl’s Foil squads lost 4-5, with strong fencing by Sophie Goldstein (2-1), Emma Lynch (2-1) and Alexandra Bernard (2-1) keeping the score close. The Girl’s Epee squad led the way to victory with a 6-3 win, with the help of Julia Szabo’s undefeated record (3-0). The fencing team shows great improvement and a stellar performance as they prepare to host the 2013 High School Fencing State Championships next week.

Squash

It was a great week for Beaver squash. The team had several challenge matches this week that resulted in a change of order on the team’s  ladder. The team also visited Squashbusters to play their 11/12 grade team. They were very strong, but many players had very competitive matches.

Wrestling

This week the wrestling team lost to LCA. On Saturday, the boys competed in the Northern New England Wrestling tournament at the Hyde School in Woodstock, CT and had a day to remember. Champions included two of the seniors on the team. Tyler Kavoogian at 132lbs and Tyler Myrick at 145lbs both impressed and walked away with 1st place in their respective weight classes. Josh Berland placed 2nd at 138lbs. The wrestling team wrestles St. Sebastians and Landmark school today 2/4 at home.
