Senior ace Sebastian Smith picked up his second win in as many Fridays and the bats came alive, as Beaver defeated the visiting Bancroft Bulldogs 12-5 on Friday afternoon at the diamond on Upper Field.
The Beaver 9 were paced offensively by sophomore infielder Jeremy Kaplan who went 2-4 with two doubles and five RBIs. After leaving the bases loading in the 1st, Beaver finally got on the scoreboard in the 2nd when senior Garrett Ekpunobi rocketed a triple to deep right center and scored when Smith reached on an error.
After Bancroft answered with two runs of their own in the top half of the 3rd, Kaplan got to work. In the bottom half, following a Connor Laubenstein single and back to back walks drawn by Devon Friedfertig and Max Corman-Penzal, Kaplan belted a bases clearing double to left. He would find himself in a similar bases loaded situation in the bottom of the 6th, when after a Steven Phillips base hit and two Bulldog errors, Kaplan roped another double to left that plated Laubenstein and Phillips.
That would be more than enough for the Beaver pitching staff as Smith threw 103 pitches, going five and two-thirds innings, allowing 6 hits while sitting down 8 by way of the K to improve to 2-0 on the year. Friedfertig, making his second appearance of the season on the slab, pitched a perfect inning and a third, striking out three to earn his first save of the season.
Beaver visits league foe Concord Academy on Wednesday, April 20th at 4:30.
