Beaver’s varsity softball and baseball teams led a skills clinic with softball players from Brookline Special Olympics on April 27 in Gym B. The athletes enjoyed a fun afternoon, running relay races and practicing batting and fielding skills together. On April 30 the Special Olympians were invited to attend and be a cheering squad at the girls’ varsity softball game versus Concord Academy. This partnership is one that Sherry Levin hopes to continue to develop with fall and winter teams next year.
Rebecca Sherlock, Brookline Special Olympics coordinator, is enthusiastic about the new connection, “Our athletes LOVED it, and the parent-spectators were thrilled! The BCDS athletes were absolutely amazing with the Special Olympics athletes. I drove a couple of my players back to Brookline and they told me they were so proud that some of the ‘baseball guys’ said they were good batters and throwers! Practicing alongside the BCDS athletes and hearing so many positive, encouraging words was a priceless self-esteem booster for the Special Olympics athletes. I know they are going to take that newfound confidence and transfer it right to their on-field play!”
