MS Minutes: 02.10.26

Posted on February 10, 2026

Hello, Middle School Students and Families! Here is a recap of today’s Middle School Meeting.

Sage Burkhead ’30 ran today’s meeting. You can check out the slides from this week’s meeting here.

The BVR Student

Aaron Dilk ’31 and Wesley Wu ’31 presented acts with honesty, integrity, and sincerity.

“Acting with honesty and integrity can get you out of a lot of situations and help you be a better person. For example, imagine you accidentally knocked over a vase and blamed the dog. The dog could be disowned, and that creates a bigger problem than there ever was. The problem could have just gotten resolved if you had come clean and said you broke the vase, because you’d still have a dog. Sincerity is being fully honest and saying what you believe. And not saying things just to please other people. It’s important that people know how you feel. Doing all these things will help you be a person other people want to be around.”

Announcements

🌎 Ms. Garayúa, Brooklyn Nieves Farrell ’32, Jack Ledley ’31, Estelí Valenzuela ’31, Elliot Enyeart ’30, Avery Thompson ’31, and Reade Mrazek ’30 shared takeaways from the Social Justice Retreat:

  • “I learned about the impact of fake news or disinformation, and it helped me reflect on how I react to different things and whether or not they are true.”
  • “At the Social Justice Retreat, I learned that AI affects the world’s environment. Data centers are the computers behind AI, and they use a lot of energy and water.”
  • “I have learned about how often times people in power don’t see the true effect of their actions on others. I also now know strategies to avoid doom scrolling and how to not be desensitized to violence, and I know about tactics that social media uses to spread misinformation and/or keep you hooked on it.”

🏀 BVR is celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day tomorrow. Romy Seidman ’28, a member of the Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT), and Brittany Franklin ’28, as well as the whole Middle School Girls basketball team, invited the community to the girls’ basketball games tomorrow:

  • MS Girls Basketball vs. BB&N 3:15 p.m.
  • Girls JV Basketball vs. Pingree 4:30 p.m.
  • Girls Varsity Basketball vs. Proctor 4:30 p.m.

The MS team will be joining the Varsity team in starting lineups & half-time knock-out competition. There will also be special snacks served.

🗣️ Elliot Enyeart ’30 announced that it is time to sign up for the spring season of Speech and Debate! On Wednesday nights, Beaver Middle School students—alongside middle school students from other schools—get together to practice speech and debate with Lumos. Lumos helps students practice public speaking and critical thinking skills by discussing news, writing, politics, and hot-topic issues. There are even opportunities to go to debate tournaments. We encourage students who’ve never done it before to sign up. There are six available slots. This program is offered to BVR students at no cost.

🏫 Parent/Caregiver & Teacher Conferences will take place over the next three Fridays—February 13, 20, and 27. There is no school for students on these days, though students are encouraged to attend their conferences.

The babysitting class is also happening this Friday; students who got into the class were notified by email.

🧠 Feed Your Brain Day is Thursday, February 12. In the morning, students will participate in workshops, and then we are all going ice skating at Daly Rink after lunch/recess. We will be back in time for regular dismissal.

🎉 Kat Nahvi ’31 announced Giving Day, happening tomorrow. Giving Day is a day the school encourages everyone—parents/caregivers, alumni, and even grandparents—to come together to show their love for Beaver by making a financial contribution. The money goes to the Annual Fund, which helps cover the essential costs of our School that tuition does not cover. And to celebrate on campus tomorrow, we are having cookies for a snack during advisory!

Wellness Classes this week:

  • 7th-grade topic: Drug and Alcohol Education and Prevention

Questions for families to discuss with their students:

  • What is the connection between stress and substance use?
  • What strategies did you learn for handling stress?
  • If you hear something about drugs or alcohol from friends or online, would you feel okay asking me about it?

Student Reminders

We watched a great video made by Caroline Coe-Rohl ’30 and Rose Scott ’30 about not leaving the Dining Room before noon.

I told Middle School students that throwing snowballs is not allowed on campus for safety reasons.

We reminded students to clean up trash in the Gym as they leave meeting each week, and we showed a clip from a movie of Mr. Barber cleaning up trash after last week’s meeting.

Students were reminded to let Ms. Hollos know if they want to run a MS Meeting.
