Middle School Play: Sideway Stories from Wayside School

Posted on October 23, 2025

Students turned into apples. Hypnotic pickles. Pigtails that come to life. It’s hard to believe, but all of these things (and more) can be found in Beaver’s Middle School fall play, Sideway Stories from Wayside School.

Based on the 1978 children’s novel of the same name, Sideway Stories follows the students and staff of Wayside; a thirty-story school that was built sideways by mistake. “My favorite part of the show is how funny it is, you don’t expect anything that happens to happen,” says Estelí Valenzuela ’31, who plays the school principal. “It’s really fun to be part it!”

This is my first year at Beaver, so it’s been really fun getting to meet a lot of kids with this show. It’s fun to see everyone’s personalities through their characters.

Students have been hard at work on and off stage bringing the show to life. In order to deliver on the humor of the show, actors have focused on comedic timing, characterization, and their chemistry as a cast. Off stage, technicians have meticulously worked on audio, visual effects, and props to deliver on the whacky illusion of the Wayside School. As stage crew member Layla Gold ’30 reflects, “through this show, I’ve learned how to work with other people. I’ve learned how to communicate better.”

Performances of Sideway Stories from Wayside School will take place on Thursday, October 23 and Friday, October 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the Black Box Theater. Tickets can be purchased here.

People should come see the show because we put a lot of work into it! It’s very fun and interesting.
