In recognition of an incredible career and continued commitment to Beaver, John Weltman ’75 was honored with the 2025 BVR Alumni Award at Reunion this year.
John Weltman has built a career defined by innovation, compassion, and commitment to equity. In addition to being a commercial litigation attorney, John is also known as the founder of Circle Surrogacy, a pioneering global agency in the field of surrogate parenting. Recognized internationally as a leader in reproductive law and an advocate for LGBTQ+ family building, John has combined his legal expertise with personal experience to redefine what’s possible for families around the world.
Weltman professional accomplishments are impressive, but his continued connection to Beaver is equally inspiring. He remains an active member of the community—reuniting classmates, serving on the Board of Trustees, supporting campaigns, and lending his voice to school events. Most recently, he returned to campus to speak with Philosophy students about his life and career.

When speaking with students, Weltman offered up his expertise, engaging in discussions with students about entrepreneurship, investing, politics, and philosophy. He detailed both the technical aspects of surrogacy in addition to the ethical and emotional complexities that come with it. Weltman’s infectious humility and humor inspired students to ask questions on topics ranging from the legality of surrogacy to the most interesting clients he had as an attorney. More than anything, Weltman encouraged students to follow their passions and use personal experiences as ethical compasses.
It’s really hard having a job that doesn’t excite you. If you do something you love, you are so much more likely to do well at it and pursue your passion.
