A lasting legacy: the class of 1972 and the Carnell S. Eaton Fund

At the Class of 1972’s 50th Reunion back in May 2022, classmates reflected on Beaver’s lasting impact on their lives. Each memory and conversation was incredibly moving, shedding light on the experiences of Beaver alumni throughout the years. The most stirring reminiscence was that of Sharon Eaton Hinton, who recalled how her day-to-day life had been very tough at Beaver, no more so than following her father’s shocking and tragic murder. Sharon recounted that the loss of her father—Carnell S. Eaton, a Black civil rights activist—only heightened her sense of isolation at her elite and white private school.

Following Sharon telling her story, the Class of ’72 created an endowed fund to recognize and support Carnell S. Eaton’s racial justice activism and his belief in the power of education that puts an emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

This past March, Head of School Kim Samson joined the Class of ’72 for an evening discussion on the Carnell S. Eaton Fund at the BVRConnects Alumni Event in New York. We are continuing the conversation with alumni, faculty/staff, and students to determine how this fund—and its story—can make a meaningful impact at Beaver.
