Upper School Weekly Wrap-Up: 02.21.22

Girls Varsity Basketball Header Update

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—February 21 through February 25 —in the Upper School. School was closed Monday due to President’s Day.

In Tuesday’s Club Spotlight we spoke with the Jewelry Making Club, and they shared the different materials they use to create jewelry of all kinds.

Design Level Spring Cleaning also began Tuesday All MS/US students (and faculty) are encouraged to take home their project(s), properly label and re-shelve project(s) if they are still works-in-progress, or help us recycle the materials and return them to the materials library if they can be reused.

In Wednesday’s Upper School Meeting, Head of School Kim Samson talked to students about the plan to go mask-optional starting this Monday, February 28. She emphasized how it’s critical we all support one another and respect anyone who decides they want to continue to mask for any reason (or on any given day).

“We will avoid making assumptions about why an individual might choose to wear or not wear a mask, and we will check in with one another, compassionately without judgment,” she said.

She shared a similar message that evening with parents during the community Zoom. Check out this week’s health update for more details.

On Thursday, students in Theories of Punishment exhibited and showcased their work around Criminal Justice Reform on the Design Level. For the past three weeks, students researched and examined issues related to the criminal justice system and worked to create solutions. They consulted with experts, attended a virtual field trip to a medium-security prison, and interviewed a man who spent 35 years in prison who spoke about the collateral consequences of incarceration and the challenges faced when re-entering society. For their final projects, students made infographics, created presentations, written bills, made websites, created blueprints of their designs, written training manuals, and used virtual reality to highlight their selected topics while also proposing viable solutions.
