Upper School Weekly Wrap-Up: 02.04.22

Beaver in Snow Weekly Update

Here is a short wrap-up from this past week—January 31 through February 4 —in the Upper School.

In Advisory on Monday, students watched two videos and engaged in conversations about Black History Month (February) and the Lunar New Year (February 1). Students continued to celebrate the Lunar New Year all week long in Ms. Xu’s Chinese classes, making decorations in class, learning Chinese New Year’s songs, and talking with members of the senior Chinese community in Boston about their experiences.

During club block on Tuesday, students were hard at work preparing and brainstorming for the weeks and months ahead. In this week’s Club Spotlight, Model United Nations (MUN) club leaders Richard Murphy ’22, Joseph Fandrey ’22, Alice Molinsky ’23, Ian Travis ’23, and Jack Botein ’23 shared how they’re preparing for the three-day Boston Invitational Model UN Conference, which starts today (Friday, February 4).

In addition, the highly-anticipated Angela Lorenz Mosaic Exhibit—Sports Garb/led—opened Tuesday. It will run through February 18 in the Griffin Gallery and features works inspired by the cultural differences between gender and Title IX.

Then, on Tuesday night, we enjoyed the annual Winter Choral Coffeehouse, where B-side A Cappella and Select Singers performed alongside vocal soloists.

Instead of an Upper School meeting, we had Open Advisory on Wednesday to give students and advisors an opportunity to check-in and connect, one-on-one. Some advisories played games, sang, and even danced!

Wednesday was also the 36th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Beaver students, faculty, staff, and alumna shared #WhyIPlay and all students had the opportunity to sign a banner pledging to support equality in athletics and beyond.

BAM! POW! DAM! The 2022 Senior Annual Fund campaign launched Thursday during Senior Class Meeting. During this superhero-themed morning event, students enjoyed breakfast sandwiches from Sally’s Sandwiches and learned about the Beaver Annual Fund, what it supports, and how they can make an impact. The class was challenged to reach 100 percent giving participation in one week. Can they do it?!

In the other class meetings, the 9th graders made time capsules; the 10th graders played basketball, spike ball, or relaxed and colored; and the 11th graders participated in different stations of activities ranging from making Valentine’s cards and playing basketball.
