On January 14, 2019, Head of School Peter Hutton announced the 2019-2020 school year would be his last year at Beaver.

Below is the email sent to the BVR community on that date.

Dear Beaver Community,

For years I have urged students, teachers, and administrators to “Think Both/And”, “Launch/Test/Refine”, “Learn, Unlearn, Relearn” – to embrace the notion that planning is iterative and opportunistic, not linear and episodic.

So … it’s about time I took my own advice. My 27 years as Head of Beaver have been the best professional experience I could ever have imagined, and now it’s time for me to push myself to try something new and unfamiliar. My “plan” is to leave education to pursue opportunities in the private sector. What does that mean for timing?

The 2019-2020 school year will be my last year at Beaver.

Why now? This is the perfect time to go. In my nearly three decades here we have never had a stronger faculty, management team, staff, and Board of Trustees. We have just completed a successful $25M campaign and in 2020 we will be launching our centennial celebration. Our brand – as the only genuinely future-focused school in the Boston area – has never been stronger. This is a huge opportunity for the school and the community to continue pushing our brand and mission forward, and – true to the spirit of the school – we will continue to pursue initiatives and opportunities; nothing changes. Beaver represents a tremendous opportunity for a new leader.

The Board of Trustees and I have been preparing for this opportunity and will be working hard alongside the senior management team to plan the succession. The Board has consulted with like-minded organizations recently completing their own searches and has named a search committee, which is in the final stages of selecting a search firm. In the coming weeks, we will share more details with you about the search process.

That said, it’s waaay too soon for goodbyes. I will be here through June 2020 and will continue to work to expand the nature of school for students. If we come up with a good idea June 29, 2020, we’ll go for it!

With Thanks,
Peter Hutton
