We are honored to present Ilan Moss ’93 with the 2015 Driscoll Award for Social Responsibility.

Moss has spent half his career in Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia, helping international organizations tell their stories. Last December, he moved to New York and became communications manager Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi).

For a number of years, Moss has worked to improve access to essential medicines. The Ebola crisis has exposed the wide health gap between developed and developing countries. In his communications work, Moss has tried to convince people to care about global health – not because it could end up in their backyard but because of larger notions of equity and fairness.

With DNDi, Moss is raising awareness about neglected diseases such as sleeping sickness and river blindness. Previously, he worked with UNITAID – a global initiative that raises money from a tax on airline tickets for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis – at the World Health Organization.

Moss believes strongly in using a reporter’s toolkit to tell better stories, particularly through new digital tools. From 2009 until 2011, Moss led digital strategy for an innovative global health micro-fundraising campaign in Spain. In 2012, he developed a single-subject news website with the French newspaper Libération on the Syrian refugee crisis, combining academic research, multimedia field reporting, and data visualization.

Trained as a journalist, Moss’s work has been published in the New York Times, Reuters, Guardian, Huffington Post, OECD Observer, Jerusalem Post, Forward, JTA, Food Republic, Miami Post, Latin Business Chronicle, and many other news outlets and websites. He graduated Beaver in 1993 and went on to New York University. He then pursued Master’s degree in Political Economy from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Ilan started his career advocating for Holocaust-era insurance and bank claims with the New York State Banking Department.

When he has some spare time, Moss dabbles in Klezmer accordion and old time banjo. To this day, one of his seminal musical moments was with the Beaver Band, rocking the bass guitar on Comfortably Numb at a 9 a.m. morning assembly.
