Currently showing in the NLG: Multiples

Multiples is a collaborative sculpture project completed by 8th graders and inspired by the work of Tara Donovan – an artist who uses large quantities of man-made, mass-produced, nontraditional art materials.

Student were assigned a large quantity of a nontraditional material and, working in partners and small groups, were asked to explore the material’s potential and create something new.

The results are inspiring and unconventional.

This show spreads beyond the gallery walls to many locations around the school. You can find a map of all these additional locations in the NLG.

Here are just a few of the installations:

  1. I really enjoyed the rubber gloves sculpture. How did you construct/make the rubber gloves sculpture and in what ways did you cut to rubber gloves to make this possible?

  2. Looking at all the fantastic art in the gallery and out of the gallery I started thinking how the middle school made and thought of these ideas. My number one question is for the people who made the 3 glove flowers. How did you come up with the idea to use rubber gloves and is there anything you would add to it if you could?

  3. With the 1,000 zip-ties, why create the American Flag? Why not create the Beaver symbol out of the zip-ties?

  4. Question for the gallery:

I thought the spoon sculpture was really cool. I would like to know what your thought process was while coming up with the idea to make this ‘spoon mountain’ of sorts. Did you plan it out? Did you just start glueing things together? How long did it take you to create this piece?
