Weekly Athletics Write-Up 10/27/14

Girls Varsity Soccer –

The Girls Varsity Soccer team had a solid week. On Wednesday, the team faced a tough ISL opponent in St. George’s. While the girls played very well, they were unable to convert on their chances, ultimately falling 1-0. On Friday, the girls had a rematch with Concord Academy. After bursting out to a 1-0 lead, Concord rallied to tie it in the second half. The girls hit three cross bars throughout the game, until Maddie Mullin ’18 finally put Beaver ahead in the 68th minute, ultimately securing a 2-1 win. This week, two more tough EIL games await in Winsor and Berwick.

Boys Varsity Soccer –

The Boys Varsity Soccer team played two league games this past week, and came away with a win and a draw. On Wednesday, the boys traveled to Portsmouth Abbey and scored early and often in a torrential downpour. The weather conditions favored attacking players, as the score finished 6-3. On Friday, the team settled for a frustrating draw vs. Concord Academy on the road. Beaver outshot their opponents 18 – 4, but the Concord keeper and gritty defending by Concord’s boys thwarted Beaver’s attempts. This week, the team will travel to Bancroft on Wednesday, host Berwick on Friday, and then travel to Class A powerhouse, Exeter, on Saturday. The boys now stand at 8-0-3 in league play and 9-4-3 overall.

Varsity Volleyball –

This past week the Varsity Volleyball team played Concord Academy on Wednesday. The team lost in three but played extremely well in the first two sets. Jasmine Breakstone shined for Beaver with great defensive play and solid serving. This week, the girls will travel to Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall on Monday and host Dana Hall on Saturday.

Varsity Field Hockey –

The Beaver Field Hockey team had a busy and progressive week. On Wednesday the field hockey team hosted an international match against Bloomfield Collegiate school from Belfast, Ireland, where the varsity team lost 4-0. Despite the loss, the team was in good spirits and enjoyed the cultural experience. Friday, Beaver hosted concord academy at home where Beaver lost 2-1 by a goal in the last 38 seconds of play. Molly Honan ’17, who normally is on the defensive line, spent some time on the forward line. She scored the Beaver goal as she was able to tip the ball in the net with a reverse push.

Varsity Golf –

The Varsity Golf Team played one match this week and had another match postponed due to weather. On Monday, the team traveled to Pingree to play on a very challenging course, Myopia, and lost 5 and 1/2 to 1/2.  Ben Snyder ’17 playing at the sixth position was the lone member of the team to earn the half point by tying his opponent. The team has two matches left this season before the league tournament on Saturday. On Monday, the team will host Berwick, who has won the league for the past five seasons, and on Wednesday, the team will travel to Bancroft, who they beat earlier in the season in a very close match.

Varsity Cross Country –

The Varsity Boys and Girls Cross Country teams were off this past week. They are preparing and training hard in advance of the EIL Championship race to be held on Saturday at Berwick.
