Weekly Athletics Recap 5/12/14

Varsity Baseball –

Beaver Baseball played two games this week. The first, against Berwick, ended quickly, with a 10-0 no hit loss. Beaver Baseball bounced back, showing that they could hit and be a strong team, with the second game of the week vs LCA. The score was 4-3 going into the bottom of the 6th. Beaver manufactured runs throughout the game to keep it close, but a couple clutch hits by LCA put them over the top for an 8-3 victory,  Beaver plays again Monday at Gann and Wednesday vs Landmark.

Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse –

The Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse team played Winsor School and Berwick Academy. This week Justine Hatton scored 5 goals and Senior Captain Caroline Hill and Sydney Brown each contributed 4.  Amani Hayes-Messinger, Adut Ayuel, and Lina Sullivan also contributed goals. Kat Green made impressive saves in goal, particularly against Berwick where she saved over 50% of the shots taken on her. Additionally, the defensive unit played well under the leadership of Sarah Thompson, Hannah Goldstein, and Shantal Risk. Beaver will play their final 3 games next week, culminating with the senior’s last home game scheduled for Saturday May 17th at 11AM.

Boys’ Varsity Tennis –

This week Beaver tennis inched closer to an EIL Championship. With only one match this week against a strong Concord Academy team, Beaver reasserted its dominance at the top of the league with a 3-2 victory. Our three points came from outstanding singles performances from Hunter Flint, Gabe Belkind, and Jesse Roberts, all winning in straight sets. Both doubles matches were real nail-biters up until the final point of the match. Marc Davis and Joey Steinberg fell 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 in over two hours, while Evan Labelle and William French lost their first set 0-6, then readjusted their strategy to push their opponents to a 5-7 loss in the second. This kind of improvement set by set and willingness to adapt has been the cornerstone of this Beaver team all year.

We enter next week’s play undefeated with an away match against Pingree (wednesday) and a home match against Berwick.

Lastly, since Berwick is our final Home match, we will be honoring our two seniors Hunter Flint and Evan Labelle before the match.  Anyone that can attend is welcome to join the festivities.

Girls’ Varsity Tennis –

The Girls Varsity Tennis team added three very nice wins this week, with matches against Portsmouth Abbey, Worcester Academy and Berwick Academy. This brings their record to 6-0 in the league and 8-1 for the season. Heading into the final week of the season, the team has two more league matches against Newton Country Day (Monday) and Pingree (Wednesday). Both matches are at home (Mount Ida), and Wednesday’s match will include a special ceremony to recognize the two senior co-captains, Kate Lambroza and Mandy Gordon, who have lead by example and set the tone by putting together their own undefeated streak this season. Both Mandy and Kate have been a part of the program for four years and have helped make this team a championship contender for the past four years.  THANK YOU, KATE AND MANDY!!!

Ultimate Frisbee –

The Beaver Ultimate team played Concord Academy and Pingree this week.

Both games were cut short due to time constraints, but both games were very well played and hard fought by Beaver, though falling short on the scoreboard. The team had their lowest turn over numbers of the season, and showed that they were capable of scoring in bunches.  Beaver’s Ultimate team has continued to show improvement, but now they just need to be able to show that they can win. As Beaver goes into the last week of their season, they are hungry to find a win against Gann and CSW.
