Weekly Athletics Write-Up 2/10/14

Girls’ Varsity Basketball

The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team had another strong week with two victories. Their first came over Portsmouth Abbey. Following a snow day the team came out strong and never looked back in a convincing overall victory 54-14. On Saturday, they traveled to ISL Brooks School to face a highly competitive team. In an intense game, Beaver would eventually pull away for a very satisfying team victory. This week Beaver will face four EIL opponents.

Boys’ Varsity Basketball

The Beaver Boys’ Basketball team went 3-0 last week with victories over Bancroft, Landmark, and Berwick Academy. The team is now 18-1.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Girls’ Varsity Ice Hockey team had two big league games this past week. The team started the week against league leader Newton Country Day School. It was a back and forth game but unfortunately the team came up short. On Saturday, they hosted Dana Hall for a rematch of an earlier season game but were unable to get the puck in the net. The girls out shot Dana 27-22 (a season high shot total) but were unable to break past their goalie. The team enters their final week of the season with games against Pingree, Newton Country Day, and Milton Academy JV.

Wrestling

Beaver Wrestling had a great week leading into the post-season. On Thursday, Beaver hosted St. Sebastian’s where all four members of the team, freshmen Jacob Weil, Max Steinberg, Ben Snyder, and senior captain, Josh Berland, all recorded wins. The main event of the week came on Saturday when Beaver hosted the 2014 EIL Championships. Josh Berland ’14 pinned his way through the entire tournament and ultimately found the top tier of the podium where he has belonged all season. Jacob Weil ’17 had an outstanding day as well. Weil worked to cut down to the 113 pound weight class where he has aspired to be all season and found a great deal of success, going home with a bronze medal and an admirable performance on the day. Beaver wrestling now finds itself in the throes of the post-season and is sending Berland to the NEPSAC Wrestling Championships this Friday and Saturday at the Brooks School in in North Andover. Following that, freshmen Ben Snyder and Jacob Weil will be heading to the JV New England Championships at Tabor Academy in Marion on Sunday. Be sure to wish your Beaver classmates good luck in their post-season journeys!
