Back in 1925, when Beaver was just five years old, the school’s girls’ ice hockey program was a little different than what you would find today. The girls played outside on makeshift rinks that required a good snow shoveling prior to play. And protective gear was decades away from making an appearance. Hockey wasn’t a competitive sport either; the girls played during P.E.

We don’t know when the outdoor ice rinks disappeared and ice hockey stopped being played at Beaver, but after a long hiatus, the new girls’ varsity ice hockey team brings the sport back to Beaver – albeit in a more modern form.

The team took to the ice for its first game on Wednesday, December 7 at Pingree. Despite having only nine 6:00 a.m. practices before the game, the girls played hard and competed until the final horn.

“We are thrilled to establish a girls’ ice hockey program at Beaver,” said Athletic Director Sherry Levin. “It’s great to see all the energy and enthusiasm that the team and coaches have generated. I have admired their hard work and dedication in starting a new program that will establish a successful future.”

The team’s first home game will be on Saturday, December 17 at 1:30 p.m. at BB&N’s Nicolas Athletic Center.
