8th Grader Sees a Need and Acts On It

With Beaver moving to a 1:1 laptop environment, would we need all of the desktop computers we had on campus? And if not, what would become of them? 8th grader Gabe Snyder was asking these same questions…and he had an idea.

I have been volunteering at the Kenny School in Dorchester. I would help kids with homework, and help as a teachers aid. It was my first year at Beaver when I heard about the laptop initiative. What was Beaver going to do with all of the old computers? There were about to be 50 obsolete computers, is there any chance that I could convince them to spare one or two? Sure enough, Ms. Ausman (Director of Technology) and Ms. Cohen (Network Administrator) said that they were able to donate two computers to my cause. A friend’s father was able to arrange for me to meet with a Boston city counselor. She told me that I was doing a great job helping out, and that it was incredible that I was able to convince my school to give me the computers. She explained the situation from her point of view. There just wasn’t enough money to improve things. This made me want to do more for the school. I was able to get two copies of Microsoft Office download from Software Keep and Windows Vista through a contact. I delivered the two computers and software on October 8th, 2009.
